Secrets of Entrepreneurial Superstars

What goes behind the making of a Richard Branson, Ted Turner or JRD Tata? Why do some entrepreneurs become superheroes while others lag far behind in the race? What is the source of their never ending energy and is there something besides passion that drives them on the success expressway? We all have wondered about the secrets behind business tycoons and entrepreneurial superstars at some point of time.

Let us try to unravel the mystery behind these super heroes.

The Basics

Basics always remain the same and they are taken for granted to become even a small entrepreneur. Hard work, vision, thick skin, conviction, Integrity, smartwork and courage all play a role besides luck timing and creativity to venture into the enterprising territories.

An intuition for opportunity

The ability to see opportunity where others do not is a key trait for an extraordinary entrepreneur. A superstar learns about pioneers that have come before (to act as role model) and their drivers.

Uncomplicate

The superstar looks at complex things through the eyes of a child and tries to simplify things wherever possible. KISS is the key, 'Keep it short and simple.'

Adaptability

When one thing doesn't work, the superstar is quick to figure out something that will and carries on with the same ferocity. The lion king attacks with the same energy whether he attacks a weak or a strong prey.

Determination

The ability and willingness to work for very long periods of time without immediately seeing results is a very crucial skill to become a superstar. One needs to be able to keep the momentum going through the seemingly dead spells.

Discovering purpose and passion

A superstar first finds the purpose and passion which propels him/her into becoming a successful entrepreneur.

Goal orientation

Specific and measurable goals are critical to check whether the business is going in the right direction. One must also accept that failure isn't failure, but a learning opportunity for the next adventure. As the quote goes, "Obstacle is something you see when you take your eyes off the goals."

Realism to the core

When writing a business plan, halve the sales forecast and double the costs. If the numbers still add up then one has a viable opportunity. A superstar is optimistic about the expenses and pessimistic about the revenues.

Common sense plus attention to detail

They say, "If you take care of the small things, big things will take care of themselves" An entrepreneur must have the not so common 'common sense' to guide him to right actions and decisions.

High self discipline plus prioritization

Having no one to tell what to do can be a double-edged sword. It's great to have the freedom to make one's own decisions, but if ultimately one does not work, one will not have a business left. It is good to have a mentor who not only guides but checks the performance on a regular basis. It is very crucial not to loose the sense of priority.

Energizer

The entrepreneur should not only have the energy to do what he plans but also energize his employees to bring out their best.

Networking Power

Vitamin Connect is very critical to become a super performer. The entrepreneur should be able to network and connect with people comfortably. As one magazine says, "Business is Networking"

The internal drive and Achievement Orientation

A drive which is almost obsessive is a must to create business empires. For a superstar, each achievement and laurel generates energy and drive for another achievement.

Resilience

When you get knocked down, and you will, get back up again. There comes a point though when you have to ask why you are getting knocked down so much. Fall seven times, stand up eight. An entrepreneur needs to have an attitude which is sustained throughout a career. A superstar does not listen to others' doubts and treats them as "doubts about their capability"

A doer, not an idea merchant

An action-oriented, problem -solver fits the mold of an entrepreneur. He cannot afford to just ideate and then not being able to convert ideas into reality. As the proverb goes, "Life is action, not contemplation" The superstar patiently executes his ideas till dreams are converted into reality.

Owning a unique product or process

If the entrepreneur has a marketable unique product or process, he is likely to become a superstar. For example, the backrub code behind Google, the mix behind Heinz ketchup or Coke, the clean room checklist behind Intel's fabs, or the software that tells UPS or FedEx drivers where and when to pickup and deliver.

If you are ready to inculcate these qualities in yourself and fortune will favour the brave, you are all set to become a Entrepreneurial Superstar.
